Celebrating Over 80 Years Of Service!

The American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy (AAOA) represents over 2,700 Board-certified otolaryngologists and health care providers. Otolaryngology, frequently referred to as Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT), uniquely combines medical and surgical expertise to care for patients with a variety of conditions affecting the ears, nose, and throat, as well as commonly related conditions. AAOA members devote part of their practice to the diagnosis and treatment of allergic disease. The AAOA actively supports its membership through education, research, and advocacy in the care of allergic patients.

"Advance the comprehensive management of allergy and inflammatory disease in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery through training, education, and advocacy."

Research Proposal Submission Guidelines

American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy Foundation Research Award

The AAOA Foundation seeks to advance allergy research and knowledge for the treatment of otolaryngic conditions by inviting applications for grants to conduct research in the pathogenesis, pathophysiology, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of otolaryngic allergy.  Funds are available to support multiple projects each year; each project may have total direct costs of $10,000.

Purpose

The award’s primary purpose is to generate new knowledge that will result in better understanding of allergic conditions. Aligning with the Foundation’s mission, proposals must have a primary allergy endpoint or be of substantial importance to the AAOA.

Eligibility

Residents and medical students are encouraged to apply.  The principal investigator and/or listed key personnel on the grant proposal must be current AAOA members in good standing, or become an active candidate for membership.

Terms

  1. Amount: $10,000 maximum total direct costs. These funds may not be used to cover indirect costs.
  2. Period: 1 year, non-renewable
  3. Funding: Between two and eight $10,000 awards will be awarded annually.
  4. Applicants must be AAOA members or have completed an AAOA membership application to receive funds.
  5. Letters of notification will be sent approximately six to eight weeks from submission deadlines.
  6. Start date: If awarded, the funds may be activated as early as September 1 (for the June 1st submission deadline), or March 1 (for the December 1st deadline).
  7. Results must be presented at an AAOA scientific meeting, and a manuscript based on the results must be submitted to the AAOA’s official journal (International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology).

Allowable Costs

A detailed budget and budget justification constitute part of the application and will be evaluated as part of the review process. Please note that budget expenses may be audited. Guidelines for use of grant funds are as follows:

Use of Funds

Salaries and Benefits: Funding may not be used for salary support for the PI; however, up to 50% of the total budget may be requested to support assistants or other technical personnel.

Research Support: Allowable research expenses include: supplies, equipment, consultants, travel for presentation at AAOA scientific meetings (capped at $1,500); statistical services, including personnel and computer time, and publication costs for manuscripts directly resulting from the supported program of research.  All equipment and supplies purchased with this grant become the property of the recipient institution.
